On March 17, 2015, after just 9 short years and the day after her birthday, our beloved Anastasia passed away.  Our hearts are heavy with grief but we are filled with the joy in knowing how many lives Anastasia touched and the millions of smiles she brought to those who needed them.

Three Rivers Hospice and Laura Sokolovic, Director of Public Relations and Pet Therapy - as well as Anastasia’s Mom - have been moved deeply by the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time.  “As painful as the last few weeks have been,” says Laura, “my spirits have been lifted by the wonderful stories I’ve been hearing about how Anastasia touched hearts and made such a positive impact on so many.”

Anastasia set a high standard for therapy dogs and, although there will never be another Anastasia, her sister, Arianna has already been fast at work.  She has been making visits, showing off her own fashion sense, but most importantly, bringing smiles to those who need them.  We know Anastasia is proud.

About Our Program:

Three Rivers Hospice's Pet Therapy Program is the first of its kind in the area. Created by Laura Sokolovic, Dir. of Public Relations and Pet Therapy for Three Rivers Hospice, and her dog, Anastasia, they were the first “pet therapy team” to work solely for a hospice agency. When asked about the growth of similar pet therapy programs throughout the area Laura replies, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.  I am very proud to have been on the ground floor of this exciting field and it compliments me to know that so many people have followed our program. It is truly a blessing."

What Are The Benefits to Pet Therapy?

  • prompting smiles
  • increasing socialization and exercise
  • memory stimulation
  • decreasing stress
  • lessening loneliness
  • and providing a true friend
Arianna is the newest member of our Pet Therapy Program. She was born at Jemar Rottweilers in Omaha, Nebraska, just like Anastasia. In fact, Arianna is Anastasia's great niece!

Arianna flew home with me when she was eight weeks old on US Airways-as my carry-on Luggage!  She is being trained for therapy dog work in our program. While Arianna already knows that she is our little princess, her great aunt, Anastasia, will always be the QUEEN!

To introduce Arianna to Western PA, Puppy Showers were held across the nine counties we service. All gifts and monetary donations were distributed to local animal shelters. Just one of the many ways we at Three Rivers Hospice and Family Home Health Services, Inc., give back to the communities we serve.

Anastasia drew people to her wherever she went - wearing a different outfit for every occasion from her vast wardrobe. She was dedicated to "bringing smiles to those who need it.”

When Anastasia visited, faces lit up and people began to interact with her by hugging, kissing or just petting her. She brought excitement to an otherwise mundane day.

Pets do not discriminate; they shower people with love and affection without asking for anything in return.
